The Rank-up system Empty The Rank-up system

Post by Prinny Mask Mon Jun 01, 2015 4:48 pm

    Some Background
The ranking system in CS:GO was based on an old Chess system called the Elo rating system. The way it works is your rank will change depending on the ranks of the players, how you're expected to perform, and your actual performance in-game. Honestly though, nobody actually knows for sure how it works, and the developers of CS:GO seem more concerned with placing hats on chickens and controlling a virtual market where pixelated Karambits are worth more than real weapons. We might as well infer that everytime a game ends, a virtual slot machine gets pulled that determines whether you get demoted, promoted, or stay the same rank.

The following is a quote from a Valve Employee in 2014:
"For Competitive, we built a CS:GO-specific competitive ranking system that is significantly different and more complex than Elo. The CS:GO competitive ranking system started with ideas based on Glicko-2 rating model and improved over time to better fit the CS:GO player base. All computations are performed on our matchmaking backend and multiple matchmaking parameters describing scientific set of rating variables of a player are represented to players as a their Skill Group. You should be able to find papers on rating systems involving rating volatility and rating deviations online to get a better idea about why our complex competitive matchmaking parameters cannot be represented as a single numeric value." -Vitaliy

What factors most likely affect your rank?
(written in descending order from biggest factor to lowest)
The outcome of the game. (Win/Loss/Tie)
    Your rank.
The ranks of the other players.
    Your Score
    Contribution

The system is evidently complex, so complex that we'll never know how it works, because Valve won't tell us. From my experience, the outcome of the game is by far the biggest factor in ranking up. Anything else makes a slight impact on whether or not you rank up/down. It's almost like Valve wants you to de_rank. Or you know... worry about your rank so much, that when you settle for the fact that you can't get past DMG, you go and buy a smurf account, creating even more revenue for Valve. Another genius move.
    Where Do I start off?
Everyone starts off at the bottom of the ranks from either side.

    How it Works
I'm going to explain how the ranking system works with a fictional scenario. Let's say you are currently ranked Anjelly and the other player however, is Alucard

Win the game double points for you, lose the game and no big deal you won't lose much

Let's say you get promoted. The factors behind this could be that not only did you win the game, but you won against a player of higher rank. Winning against higher ranked players will rank you up faster.
Basically it's like this. You win and win, you'll rank up. You lose and lose, you'll de_rank. Lose against lower ranks, de_rank faster. Win against higher ranks, rank up faster. Tie against lower ranks, lose some dignity, and it may count as a loss. Tie against higher ranks, laugh, and it probably counts as a win.

The hardest gap to overcome in the ranking system is trying to rank up from Yuki-ona to Alucard.

The top 2 ranks are much harder to rank up in as the skill level is obviously much higher,

Your rank expires after 30 days of inactivity, until your next win.
